Does size really matter? How much is enough kitchen storage?

When studying kitchen design, I will always remmember the best advice given to us by a revered New York City chef. In short, a properly organized kitchen is one in which he can walk right in and as he works find the items he needs, exactly where he needs them, and nothing else! This has always been my guideline in creating a well-designed kitchen.

When I first begin with a client, the most popular request is lots and lots of storage. After a slow "detox" program, my clients come to enjoy the "lighter side of being". They ultimately enjoy the advantages of well equiped kitchen with specific work areas, and specific tools, without a lot of extra unnecessaries.

The fine art of editing is alive and well when it comes to refining kitchen storage. Being able to edit what is really needed and used allows easy access to those items in prime location. The kitchen's purpose remains that of food prep. The different work zones are designated precisly for washing, cutting, cooking and storage. Each can function at their best when unimpedded by excess.
